When it comes to residential play structures they usually just sit on the surface that is in your backyard play area such as grass , gravel pit or wood chip box. In 99 % of all home installs there is no need to dig holes and cement any of the structure into the ground. Most swing set kits that you get thru mail order or at the retailers just as COSTCO , WALMART , TARGET or TOYS R US sometimes come with metal or wood stakes that you can drive into the ground about 16 inches and attach to either the fort or swing beam A-FRAME for more stability. These stakes are usually wood and about 18 inches long and then can be screwed into the structure to help keep the play set from moving ,jumping or rocking from all the back and forth motion associated with kids playing on them. Usually these stakes are a good idea when dealing with some of the thinner wood constructed “KITS” from these retailers. If the ground is level and the swing set is designed with heavy duty materials stakes are not needed. Watch for irrigation pipes or buried cable when hammering down stakes.
